Comparison of 22 LR vs 22 WMR vs 17 HMR - The Best Rimfire Ammo Cartridge

Jun 29th 2018

Rimfire cartridges are really some of the most popular cartridges used in America. It is called rimfire because the firing pin of a gun strikes and crushes the base's rim to ignite the primer. The rim of the rimfire cartridge is essentially an extended and widened percussion cap which contains the priming compound, while the cartridge case itself contains the propellant powder and the projectile. Frenchman Louis-Nicolas Flobert invented the first rimfire metallic cartridge in 1845. Rimfires are the standby for every hunter to enjoy best shooting experience.
Let's take a look at the .22 LR, .22 WMR, and the .17 HMR to see the pros & cons of each caliber. After reading this, hopefully the right cartridge choice for you is more clear.

.22 LR Ammo

The .22lr ammo is one of the the oldest rimfire cartridge. American firearms manufacturer J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company introduced the cartridge in 1887. It is an excellent cartridge for shooting small targets at short distances. Low cost, minimal recoil, and relatively low noise make the .22lr an ideal cartridge for recreational shooting, initial firearms training, small-game hunting, and pest control.

One of the biggest drawbacks to the .22 LR is the drop of the bullet downrange and its susceptibility to wind. When compared to other rimfires, the .22 LR notices more drop after about 75 yards, that makes longer shots much more difficult.

At the end the .22lr has some limitations but it is a great small game cartridge, especially if those shots stay under 100 yards, and is one first time shooters will like to shoot.

.22 WMR :

.22 WMR is another good caliber option for Rimfire rifles. The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR), often called 22 magnum, was introduced by Winchester in 1959. The .22 WMR was the answer for shooters who had wished for a rimfire cartridge accurate to 125 yards and having enough energy to take game and varmints up to 20 pounds. Using a V-Max 30 grain bullet, this cartridge can move down range at 2200 feet per second. This puts this particular cartridge right at 900 feet per second faster than your average .22 LR round.

Note that the bullet weight of the .22 WMR is actually lighter than the round used in the .22 LR test.

The .22 WMR also has a few downfalls. First off, due to the light point weight, this cartridge can still have difficulties in the wind. Also, due to the increased energy produced by the bullet on impact, it can be a little excessive if dining on cottontails is in your plans. Overall thought, the .22 WMR is a handy little varmint rimfire that gives more range than a .22 LR.

.17 HMR

.17 HMR is the last on rimfire cartridges from the list.As compared to the other rimfires on this list, the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR) is the youngest by a long shot. Designed in 2002 by the folks at Hornady, the .17 HMR has becoming one of the most popular small caliber guns in America. Major advantages of the .17 HMR is its flat trajectory, Faster flight path, Longer range capabilities and more accuracy. The major downsides of .17 HMR is that it's more expensive than other rimfire ammo, Less kinetic energy, More destructive at close range and considerably louder than other two rimfire cartridges.

In the end the .22 LR, .22 WMR, and .17 HMR all have their pros and cons. They all have their own advantages for different shooting requirements. If you are looking to make a purchase for the 22 LR, .22 WMR, and .17 HMR. Find the best bulk cheap ammo deals at Ammo Board.
